California Oatgrass

California Oatgrass (Danthonia californica) is a perennial grass native to Western US states (such as California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho) that can thrive in USDA Zones 5–10. Reaching a mature height of 1–2 feet with a low, dense tufted clumping growth habit, it features flat, hairy green leaves and produces open seed heads with bent, twisted awns. It thrives in moist to dry coastal prairies, oak openings, and mountain meadows and is ideal for native grassland restoration, durable low-water ground cover, and pasture grazing.
